WAR, WOW and MMO’s!

September 8, 2008

A shout out to Mark Jacobs, the GM of Mythic. I can’t fathom (though I think I will someday soon) the anxiety of the guy leading a company less than 10 days out of launch of what will be the biggest MMO since WoW.

The beta is still fraught with glitches and bugs (though I am pretty sure the big one, a total crash of my computer after lockup, was caused more by my NVIDIA driver being out of date than anything. Though why in the hell is it so hard to get updated drivers for hardware now? I had to search all night to find the latest drivers and then only found them on a website??) but it’s coming along and I think they have done some incredibly new and very innovative things to the gaming space.

Let’s just put it out there now though, Mythic is the cats ass at PvP/RvR…

The system they put in this game has made me a huge PvP fan.

The UI is very clean, very WoW like (not a bad thing) but to me much crisper and cleaner. I’ve played almost every class now through at least 5-6 and enjoyed most all.

Public Quests? Very cool and to me the coolest part. I think they have, and maybe will, introduce much of the WAR world through these. The races and characters not in the launch will make appearances in the PQ imo.

Anyway, we here at 38 are wishing the folks at Mythic the smoothest and biggest launch possible. Every company that raises the bar in the MMO space only adds customers, that’s a good thing. Not to mention the bar for what’s acceptable gets raised a little higher for anyone following, and that’s a great thing.

Oh, and ya, as you might have surmised, I am likely retiring to semi-retiring from WoW when WAR launches. I reserve the right to change my mind, but I think WAR is going to be my game of choice until Copernicus is launched.

Wow, i didn’t think you would retire from Wow, I knwo where you are coming from. One too many nights looking at the clock and wondering why my eyes are so bloodhsit from staring at the computer screen soo long. I’ll have to check out this new title you are talking about though.

    Thanks for the info Curt!

I’ve been playing the Beta and such. So far, I’m also enjoying the game, but I had some major issues this weekend with being disconnected after logging in. I haven’t asked around to see if I was the only one having that problem or not.

I’m not sure if you’re familiar with the Warhammer universe or not, but there are still a lot of races that can be added in the future: Ratlings, vampire counts, Wood Elves, Bretonians, and more. It certainly gives a lot of potential depth for the game.

Are you planning on setting up a guild on launch? I figure you guys at 38 Studios may have your own guild so you can check the game out ,but I usually am a solo player, but in this game I’d love to find a guild to play with.

    I had a couple of questions….
    1. What are your system specs on your home PC?
    2. Did you just use a laptop to play WoW during the season when you are on the road?
    3. Are you going to have any associations from Multi-Man with 38? Lots of possibilities there, if you go that direction.

Glad to hear that you’ve become more of a PvP fan. I had asked you about it a while ago and you had mentioned that you’re not a fan of PvP, but it’s undoubtedly one of the best aspects of an MMO in my opinion.

Take Ultima Online, for example. There are still free UO servers out there with online populations of over 1,000. Most of those people PvP because they have been unable to find a single MMO to replicate the UO experience despite the fact that it’s a 10-year old game. I really hope your game will have well-thought out and dynamic PvP interaction that will not, well, suck.

Age of Conan? Sucked. WoW? Still sucked. UO’s pvp was great because it was risky– if you died, your opponents looted you. You weren’t wasting time leveling, you simply had 700 total skill points which meant you could get to 100% on seven skills. Everyone was on an equal playing field and it was SKILL that determined the winner, not who was the higher level.

I’m glad to see that you’ve come around on PvP. Keep this in mind as you create your game: most people who play an online game to kill monsters, etc will eventually get bored. But PvP is the renewable resource of MMO’s, because there’s always a fight to be had and the fight is always different.

    Oh, and go Sox!

I signed up for the Warhammer beta many months ago, but never got accepted. I still haven’t gotten accepted since open beta started either. I wanted to give it a try/help beta test but I guess it wasn’t ment to be, oh well. No game has been able to bring back that early years of EverQuest feeling for me and I’ve played a lot of them.

I live in Maine so if you need a beta tester or anything for Copernicus let me know. I have no problem driving down to Mass once and a while if need lol

  6. September 8, 2008 1:45 pm

For me the promise of WAR is that it would integrate PvP and PvE smoothly into the total game experience – and from what I saw yesterday, it looks like that’s what we’re going to get. No more grinding for dozens of levels before you can PvP and not be a total chump at it.

There’s all kinds of little bugs left, along with some lingering client stability issues, but I expect another two or three patches before official launch on the 18th, so there’s time to clean those up.

I’m not really liking what I have heard concerning Warhammer and the removing of a lot of the classes and cities that were supposed to be in at launch. It just seems like they are rushing it out to compete with Lich King.

I’ve been on the Wrath of the Lich King beta for a couple of weeks now and am excited about a lot of the changes they have implemented. It really seems like they are taking their time to make raiding and PvP more attractive.

Could someone please make the point to Papplebon that youth will wane and he won’t always be able to throw a ball through a wall. Can you imagine what he would be like if he learned to throw a change with the same motion like Foulke or a split like you? Last night was his first clean (and it really wasn’t clean) inning in a while. The guy is great and he still hasn’t learned how to pitch. Somebody help him! And by the way……I have absolutely no earthly idea what you are talking about in this thread.

NO ONE in NY cares excessively about the brady injury… WHY?… we kicked the snot out of his cheating a-s last year… along with his cheating coach and the rest of his cheating team

maybe its karma for 6 years of cheating & running up a 52-7 score on one of the most respected coaches in the nfl?! all those 4th quarter TD’s that were so “necessary”…

either way good riddance and who cares? tying it to the sox-yanks proves how useless and immature you truly are.

if you want people to follow your worthless politics, try being educated in how you speak… as it is YOU tying this to the yankees fans, not the other way around

NY doesnt give a bloody sock about brady buddy… we beat him down… badly & fairly(at least on our end)… on the worlds biggest sporting stage…

its over and there are plenty of other things to worry about

for such an anti yank, what’s your sons name? what is your favorite fund raiser again?

Regard your rant on WEEI today about New York fans and us being happy that Tom Brady is hurt….

    1) We do not wish your player any harm
    2) The Yankee fans do not make excuses, yes we suck this year, but for 100 years we owned Boston so we can handle a brief period of underperformance
    3) In case you forgot, the Giants beat the Pats in the Superbowl…where were you then
    4) Red Sox fans are more disrespectful than Yankee fans
    5) No one cares what you think…you are a baseball player (or were at least) and you make a lot of money…however, that does not give you importance. Your opinion means nothing, you have a really big mouth, and your inflated ego is really sickening.
    6) Suck a big one.

“I’m not really liking what I have heard concerning Warhammer and the removing of a lot of the classes and cities that were supposed to be in at launch. It just seems like they are rushing it out to compete with Lich King.”

This couldn’t be further from the truth. They cut 4 of the 24 classes out of the game but they have said they may be added back in at a later date. So, that leaves 20 unique classes in the game. How many does Warcraft have again?

The city changes makes sense. If you watch their Campaign Changes podcast on their web site you’ll know why they cut out the 4 cities and replaced them with Fortresses. I think it was a good move on their part….they wanted people to focus on 2 cities and not 6 where battles would be spread out. RvR is about huge epic battles and that’s why they made the change.

As far as them “rushing” the game out to compete with Wrath of the Lich King? They’ve had the September 18th release date way before Blizzard announced the WotLK release date. They aren’t rushing anything. I’ve been in closed beta and open beta and the game is coming along nicely. There are still a few bugs that need to be ironed out here and there but the game is a freaking blast to play. I haven’t had this much fun in PvP since Dark Age of Camelot. I’m happy I finally get to hit the “CANCEL” button on my WoW account!

There are still issues with CTD’s in the game and hopefully they get it fixed before it launches on the 18th.

Try using these Nvidia drivers. I’m going to give you 4 different links, just download the one for the OS you are using:

    Windows XP 32bit

    Windows XP 64bit

    Windows Vista 32bit

    Windows Vista 64bit

Also, to get the most out of the graphics in WAR, go into your Nvidia control panel and set up a profile for War.exe, then force Anisotropic Filtering ON to 16x and Antialiasing ON to 8x. You should see a considerable increase in visuals.

    Curt aka blah blah blah:

You say on WEEI (where you love to hear yourself talk) that NYers are all fired up about Brady going down and the Yanks suc^ and blah blah blah……

If you knew ANYTHING about NY and NYers you would know that Yank fans are mostly Giant Fans……You know the NY Giants…..That beat the Brady bunch into the ground in the last Super Bowl. You know the Giants that put him on his back EVERY other play.

For future knowledge it is usually like this in NY…..Jets, Mets, Isles fans (Which I am)…………..Yanks, Giants, Rags fans (Which I am not)

The obsession you and WEEI has with NY is so sad. I mean with all the championships Boston has won of late you would think the dirty lil brother complex would end…..Obviously it has not.

NY could care less about Boston. It is a gas stop on the way up to go skiing. As a Jet fan and an NFL fan I most certainly did not want to see Brady go down. HE is great for the game. HE is a great person. HE is classy. You are not.

So lose the insecurity my friend. You were a very good pitcher. Let others talk about that instead of tooting your own horn and yapping all the time. I understand it is tough that youwill NEVER be Pedro in Bostons eyes (just wait to see how he is greeted in 20 yrs at Fenway compared to you…IT will eat you alive) You will never be the Unit in AZ eyes either. Always 2nd fiddle.

So move off into the sunset. Stop worrying about NY. And for Gods sakes lay off the cheese Doddles.

    Hey Schil,

As a Yankee/NY Giants fan I am bewildered by your comments to WEEI Radio about how “”The Yankees suck this year and they are bitter and mad and making excuses over that. Now they got Tom going down so New York’s excited. It’s unfortunate, but when you crawl to the top of the pile you will have people trying to knock you down.” I find this quite amusing as it is the GIANTS who are at the top of the pile, not your “new found” “home team” Patriots, or did you not watch the Superbowl last year. Now that I think about it you probably didn’t because your a closet homosexual and most likely watched taped re-runs of Will and Grace.

But what makes me laugh the most is this comment about Red Sox fans: “They want us to be as bitter and mad as they are,” Schilling said. “Unfortunately, it’s not going to happen.” Saying Red Sox/Patriot fans are not bitter is like saying you are going to hall of fame, its just not right. Stick to playing video games Curt, its pretty much all your good for.

Simply amazing, and no I am not referring to the Mets. Curt Schilling, the outspoken hero of all that needs to be said has struck again. I am amused, disgusted and bewildered all at the same time. For Curt to go on his self-serving, rant about NY fans, how the Yankees “suck” and everything else is pathetic. I always believed that us fans (myself included) were the only ones stupid enough to care so much about a game played by self absorbed millionaires that we would spend hours in front of a computer typing away insults, stats, and who has more championships than who. And while we did this, the players would be busy spending their money, fooling around with groupies and not giving one single shit about us, the ones sitting their defending them. But now Curt has come down off of his fat throne to throw in with the bottom feeders and attack New York fans, trying to kick us when er are down. For the record:
    1. Schilling was front and center for the Dynasty ending; yes he was, sitting in the dugout, head in his hands watching replays of his choke (giving up the eigth inning home run to Soriano in game 7, 2001 WS) You would have blown it for your team until Mariano saved your butt by blowing the save for us.

    2. Yankee fans/Giant fans dont wish ill on Tom Brady. Hes a classy guy on a very unclassy team. And last year, the Giants proved that it is way more fun to whup New England with Brady than without. Lastly on Brady, he is a Yankee fan.

    3. As for the Yankees sucking this year, well, it is what it is. True, we hate to lose, but it is inevitable. I would rather eat dogs*** than see Boston win another WS title. But it will not be the end of the world for the Yanks to miss the playoffs. Maybe it will be a good thing, maybe it will inspire the management to fix whats wrong and instill a fire in the players.

    4. Finally Curt, if Boston does win it again this year, will you accept a ring? After sitting around all year collecting the 8 million dollars that you hoodwinked from the Sox when you should have been retired two years ago? After not contributing anything but embarrassment to your team, will you spray champagne like you did something this year besides run your mouth? I never thought that I would defend anything Red Sox, but I will say this; after whupping you guys for eighty something years, I have developed some respect for the teams talent. Beating the Sox sometime in the future will be very gratifying. But as long as fat Curt is around running his mouth, they will never be totally respected. Curt, if you truly car about Boston and their fans, do the right thing, give them back the eight mill so they can go get a real player, go to a fat farm and just please go away. You are washed up, pathetic and attention seeking. Your glory days are gone. Even the fans up there are tired of your act, save the few butt kissers that come here to smooch you blubbery backside. Sox fans, good luck in October, and good Luck getting this loser Curt to fade away.

May I point out the inherent irony in most of your comments. If Curt were a “washed up hack” as most of you claim than you wouldn’t be here trashing him. He would not be worth your time. Yet you continue take time out of your day to come up with arguements to prove to him how washed up he really is. Your being here, you’re berating him, actually lend him creedance and keep him relevant. It does exactly the opposite of what you’re trying to accomplish. The irony is so palpable, it’s delicious. Thank you all for making me laugh. Honestly, whom are you trying to convince, Curt, the public…yourself.

Also, making fun of him cuz he’s a gamer? Games are only made for kids, really? Than answer me this why are most games marketed for the 18-35 y/o demographic? Not to mention he kinda owns a video game studio. What do you do? Shall we come to your website and bash your profession?

As far as Warhammer goes, there is a reason this game is the king of PvP; becaues MYTHIC is doing it. No game out there to date had a better PvP system than Mythic’s DAoC (Dark Age of Camelot for those who need an explanation) RvR system. WAR is basically DAoC 2.0, they took the great ideas from DAoC; refined and expaned them, then applied them to the rich and furtile grounds of the Warhammer mythology.

I once shared your opinion of PvP. In most games, epecially WoW it was worthless. There really is no point to it in WoW, other than to annoy you while leveling. Anyone who has been camped by a high level horde in Southshore or Darkshire know what I’m talking about. Even at high lvls the only point is for the aquiring of gear. It does nothing to drive the story.

In WAR the PvP/RvR IS the story. I am currently playing a Chaos Chosen and I haven’t had this much fun as a tank since the early days of EQ. Curt, I believe we were on the same server; Povar.

Anyway, the classes that were cut out do hurt. Most noticably, from what I have played, is the loss of the Dark Elf Blackguard. This is killing the Dark Elves in RvR. Now there only melee combatant is the healer. Fighting in melee while going up against the High Elf dps/tank combos while trying to heal others and not die with only medium armor on…sucks! I had fun in PvE and the PQ’s with my Diciple of Khaine but I constantly got rocked in RvR. I miss not having a Blackguard at my side. Alas, I switched to the Chosen and I’ve had a blast.

At launch Chaos will have the advantage over Empire. With the four classes they are much more well rounded than the Empire which only has 3 classes. For the Same reason the High Elves will have the advantage over the Dark Elves. If you want a fair fight at low level go with the Dwarfs vs Greenskins. They each have a tank Ironbreaker(D) vs Black Orc(G), a ranged dps Engineer(D) vs Squig Herder(G), and a healer Rune Priest(D) vs Shaman(G)

In the end at higher RvR lvls it will all even out, you have 10 order classes and 10 destruction classes. Which ever side you pick it’s gonna be a helluva lot of fun. Get ready for the WAAAGGHH!

This has been my slightly obstructed view from the cheep seats.

For those terrible terrible driver problems (I had the same when I tried to launch a new game recently), I actually found a company that provides a free driver updater! Gasp. Its called radarsync, and so far it has given me great results. Plus its free for cheap gamers like myself. Hope that helps, and I hope War is as good as its being hyped

For the blogger with children under the age of 10 regarding the game SPORE,
I am not in “the biz” but I am a mother of 3 boys and a former manager of a major retail game store chain. Spore has been greatly anticipated and well worth checking out for people of all ages.
    Hope this helps.
