I can honestly say pretty much everyone is anxious to get on that plane after the game today. Seems like it’s been forever since we’ve been home. There is no chance anyone on this team would make any excuses for our 3-3 record on the trip so I’ll offer only this.
I have been rehabbing this entire trip and have been able to, much more so than anyone playing, maintain as ‘normal’ a schedule as anyone could hope for. I’m wiped and still having issues trying to readjust to a ‘normal’ sleep schedule. I can’t imagine the toll it’s taken on the guys playing. I’m at the park 6 hours before each game at least, regardless of day/night game, so I can adjust my sleep to accommodate and after 2.5-3 hours my day is done. I think the short duration of the trip was the hardest part, having that 7 days was almost enough time to adjust to the far east time zone, then we were off again.
No excuses though and it’s not going to get any easier facing Doc today and then home to face Detroit and the Yanks. I know everyone is looking forward to the ring ceremony on Tuesday as well, be nice to see Douggie again.
Random thoughts and a first offer to do some more Q&A here this year as time permits.
How does Jose Canseco, who admitted he did steroids his entire career and it was what got him to the big leagues, get ‘blackballed’ from a life he admits he never should have been a part of?
I put Manny’s over/under RBI total this year at 150 and I’d be surprised if he drives in less.
I think Josh starts off another monster year today, he as focused and in shape as I think he’s ever been and last year was a great learning experience for him.
One thing about the pre-Japan trip fiasco. Many people, in and out of the media, commented on the fact that what we did was in no way noble or just or whatever the adjective, because for it to be noble would have had us giving our money or portions of our shares to them. That was never the issue, nor should it have been. Though I would argue that the guys on this team, given no other options would have gladly taken that route.
The issue was that during the negotiations for the trip we specificaly requested that the coaches shares be allotted from the overall pool. We were told that the ‘staff’ would be taken care of, more than once, only to find out that had been taken away, along with many of the other deal points negotiated during that time.
Shonda and her brother are ramping up for their final days of Boston Marathon preparation. If anyone wishes to help her raise money for the Shade Foundation please check out and donate, and thanks to anyone that participates.
The kids are starting their sports season again and Gehrig had his tryouts last week, which I had to ‘follow’ over the phone. Amazing how fast they grow up.
The folks at Blizzard are good. One of the sites I’ve run across and become a fan of is a great podcast called “The Instance”. Ya we’re geeks but it’s good stuff and pretty informative if you get a chance to hear them.
Everyone is talking about the Wrath of the Lich King and they’ve put some very cool updates here very cool stuff.
Things continue to plod along here at 38, we’ve made a few more talent acquisitions I’m excited for us to be announcing in the near future. Jen Maclean is the newest member of the 38 Family and is going to have a profound impact on this company and our future. Check out for the latest news..
Also the entrants to the 1st Annual Game Design Challenge are being whittled down and once complete we’ll have a full recap on the site.
One last thing. At Chapel today I realized once again how fortunate and blessed we all are. Going through this rehab has been a very different experience but I feel very good about the fact that mentally I have put everything I have into it. Physically I am doing everything I can, and more, to try and make this work.
At Chapel today I read a passage I had to share with those that care, that might explain why things are as easy as they can be. Proverbs 16:9 says “In his heart a man plans his course, but the LORD determines his steps.”
I can do what I can, and whatever I want, and work as hard as I can and more, but at the end of the day the LORD has chosen my path and in his infinite wisdom the path that I end up walking will be what I need most, not what I want most. I hope I can pitch again, it’s what I want, but it’s somewhat easier to swallow knowing that at some point it’s out of my hands outside the time and effort I am committing.
