Airport Wireless, nice.

November 27, 2007

Sitting in the Logan Airport waiting on a flight to San Francisco. Speaing tomorrow at the Dow Jones-sponsored Consumer Technology Innovations conference in Redwood City, then a few meetings and back tomorrow night.

You can check it out at http://consumertechnologyinnovations.dowjones.com/

Always interesting to be in front of and among the money/brains behind and inside the tech world. I’m also amazed at how much of the world I live in translates to the real world of business from a leadership standpoint.

Spent this morning with Jon Lester, Manny Del Carmen, Clay Buchholz, Justin Masterson, Michael Bowden, Caleb Clay. We got together this morning to go over where we are, and where we need to go as pitchers and a staff for the upcoming season. I think that the average age, were it not for my presence, was about 11…..

The kids look good and it’s nice to see that at this stage of their career they realize that the season is made during these months. You can and usually do shed pounds over the first month of camp, but you cannot make up the days lost with your shoulder and arm.

I know many of them are working out at either the Arizona or new Florida API clinics. That bodes well for any of them doing so.

Spent last night at the premiere of the 2007 World Series Video release. Unfortunately someone forgot to get me the clothing memo. So I showed up looking like I had just finished cutting wood, with everyone else in suit and tie. I guess the Red Carpet should have been a tip off….

Here’s a question. The Santana sweepstakes appear to be on. If you think your team is in it, what player, to you the fan, makes the deal “not worth the price”. Book the fact that you need to give up at LEAST 2 ML ready young studs, or 1 and a close to ready young superstar. What player would make you say “Nope, can’t do it.”

I am not sure where I’d draw the line at getting one of the 3 best pitchers in the game. Beckett, Santana, Dice K? Who matches up 1-3 with that? But the price, contract wise, beyond the players, has to be a factor and I would guess severely limits the size of the potential suitors list if any of the rumors are true. Contract rumors get floated for two reasons in my opinion.

1) Agent wanting to get their numbers out there to allow the field to get narrowed down and force a starting point on teams without talking to them. Also a great way to gauge where they might truly be interest wise with what they thought they might ask for.

2) Teams needing an excuse to not go after a guy by stating a hugely inflated request. True or false teams will say “That’s what we were told, and at that price we weren’t interested”. All the while knowing that if the real price was out there they’d get crucified for not taking part in the bidding war.

IF YOU GUYS ARE SICK OF ME NOW, YOU BETTER PRAY WE DONT WIN THE WORLD SERIES IN 2008. I’LL BE THE ONLY ONE HERE. OH AND IM NOT STALKING CURT, EVEN THOUGH IM NOT A FAN OF HIS, I THINK IT IS COOL THAT HE HAS CREATED A FORUM FOR EVERYONE( NOT JUST DORKY SAWX FANS) TO EXPRESS THEIR VIEWS. I GET IT, IT’S OKAY TO COME HERE AND EXERCISE YOUR RIGHT TO FREE SPEECH, AS LONG AS YOU DON’T SAY ANYTHING BAD ABOUT THE RED SOX. GET REAL… I DON’T SPECIFICALLY BLOG HERE, BUT I DO ENJOY THE BANTER. AT LEAST RED SOX FANS ARE GOOD FOR SOMETHING BESIDES WRITING THE SAME STUPID COMMENTS LIKE ‘ RE-SIGN SO AND SO! RE-SIGN THIS DIRTBAG”. OH MATT ONE MORE THING, YOU CAN BUY A CHAMPIONSHIP. RED SOX DID IT THIS YEAR… 100 + MIL FOR DICE-K ALONE? AND HE HAD A WORSE RECORD THAN ANDY PETTITTE. SO MUCH FOR HIS UNHITTABLE GYRO BALL. HE’LL NEED HIS TRANSLATOR TO TEACH HIM HOW TO SAY ” THE YANKEES ARE MY DADDY” BEFORE WE’RE THROUGH WITH HIM. GOODNIGHT ALL MY BOSTON FANS, I’LL BE GETTING UNDER YOUR SKIN AGAIN REAL SOON

another funny morning, i love it.hey, we never have anything bad to say about the redsox, we know that were in a class by ourselves your the one thats been b– about us 4 years.u win a couple ws and u think your the cats meow, well maybe when uwin 26 u might have a beef, winning 1 here 1 there isnt a dynasty, stop blaming us 4 all your losing seasons we just put a better team on the field year after year, tell your owners to spend some $ and give you a bigger ball park with good views, not moving from one side to the other, to get a good view. i know ive been there enough to know, crapy small little s— hole and just to comment on selling out every home game, when your little stadium only holds 38k pretty easy to sell out. i”ll end with this, sure its sad that we havent won in awhile, but i still have lots of great memories of us winning, and even though we lost this year early again,we still made the playoffs 13 yrs in a roll, you guys didn`t even make the playoffs in 05 after winning in 04, and i was there watching all the yankees players clapping the redsox celebrating there ws victory, i would say alot of class on our part , i have lots of redsox friends we respect each other team when were togther, not knocking it like u all do,real fans not cry babies like u, oh, by the way i also clapped in the stands, when you won 04 thats because yankee fans have class all yous guys have none. best wishes

I have a lot of respect for the Yankees. I have best friends who are Yankees fans. We respect each other and watch baseball together. “yanksrdaclassofbball” threw a cheap shot, I threw one back. That’s the way it works.

let’s face it, it’s all about beating the Yankees. So let them have Santana and it will be much sweeter when we stuff them again next year.

…and we won the division, not to mention the World Series. Yankee fans can not accept defeat.

I think Theo’s got the right idea, from the reports that have been floating around on MLB.com and whatnot. I’d be willing to give up either Lester or Ellsbury (much as I like them), but certainly not both. Bucholz has the potential to be a dominant front of the rotation starter in my opinion. Maybe not on the same level as Santana, but his future is certainly bright. Santana’s obviously an incredible pitcher, but we just don’t _need_ him bad enough to give up a huge number of MLB ready prospects.

    Curt,

I am not an expert in medicine by any means nor but I have had a career in investigations and now retired. I know that one of your concerns regarding the Mitchell report was that there was no way to determine if someone was using HGH. The way you take HGH, as I presumed correctly, is with a syringe/needle. There WILL be needle marks that may be able to be detected by perhaps some forensic medicine equipment that can zero in on such a mark.

There is a site and a doctor who might be worth contacting to explore this. Here is the website about HGH http://www.drcranton.com/HGH_instructions_for_patients.pdf

Check with some medical forensics people as I think there has to be a way to detect usage in this modern age of forensic medicine technology.

I will continue my research and feed you what I can. I am not an expert, as I said, just a dang good researcher.

Our family members are also HUGE and DEDICATED Red Sox fans and admire you for your involvement beyond the game. May you and yours have a peaceful and blessed Christmas.

    Be well, RB

Get on the bike with your wife, then you won’t have to worry about the pounds and can focus on the arm/shoulder ;)
