I got to this after the letter had been deleted, but was curious as to the comments. First off - Curt, you keep doing what you're doing... if people don't like what he has to say don't read it. Don't flame him for having an opinion on something beyond baseball, he's human and an American and it's HIS blog. If he wants to offer up parenting advice then take it or leave it, same with politics, food preferences or boxers vs. briefs. We are all entitled to our own opinions about everything and the beauty of America is that we are able to share our opinions about various things. So, if you don't like what he has to say then don't continue to read it.
Second - I am honoring Sen. McCain's service to our country today by voting for him. I believe that he has dedicated his life to the service of our country and we have the ability to walk freely and vote because of his willingness to be a patriot and fight for those rights. Obama has been the center of much controversy over his acquaintances and while Sen. McCain has had more than his fair share of media dealings, they haven't had to do with racism, terrorist, extremists and questionable judgment. I am confident that the next 4 years of my family's life will be better off with Sen. McCain at the helm.

While I have tremendous respect for you as an athlete and businessman, I hope one day you realize that politics is not a team sport and you don't do everything in your power to defeat the opponent of "your guy." This election has been about 10% policy and 90% character assassination. I wish you would rise above it instead of sinking to that level.

Curt-
I think that you missed the point, and please remember as you read this that I am on your side. I do agree with you,by the way, that the most important thing is the election and that everyone should get out and vote. Whether I agree with you politically or not(I agree with you on everything else you have voiced an opinion on except politics,as I am a Democrat) I still respect your
opinion,I respect your right to say how you feel, and I welcome any and all comments that you make, regardless of whether they differ from mine or not. I always like, want
to hear your points of view, and that will never change.
I have friends who are Republicans and have had many conversations with a close cousin of mine who is so conservative, he does not like Bush because he is not conservative enough. I found it very interesting to hear what you had to say regarding the election and McCain, and I was very glad that you did the first post that you did. However, you have to understand that I,like many others who read your posting, your blog,do so because we
want to read what you have to say, your comments, your thoughts, your feelings. We respect and value your opinion, which I think is always written brilliantly, and whether we agree with your opinion or not,we want to read your ideas about the election. I respect the right of everyone to have their own opinion,I welcome the thoughts of others, even if they differ from my own,and I thoroughly enjoyed reading your thoughts that you had posted. The point that is being made, however, and I am not sure if I agree with it or not,is that this was not your point of view but just something that you had come across,so you threw it at us. This was something that was not your own view, which we always like to read but rather the opinion of someone who we never heard of(neither have you) and more to the point, you posted it just to stir up a bit of trouble or controversy. I totally agree that people over reacted to the posting-while I did not like it,I was not as upset as some people were-and I do not think that you had to remove the letter, but you have to understand why people reacted the way that they did. There was no reason for you to have put the letter on the blog,as this was not someone that you knew and you had already stated how you feel, which we greatly appreciated,
so the only reason for you to have put the letter was to
stir up the pot? What was your reason exactly? If it was to stir up the pot a bit,it worked. I agree that they should not have been quite as harsh with you as they were, but as I said,we want to know your thoughts and feelings, not someone else's that you do not even know. At least if you had said a friend of mine wrote this piece but to put something from someone that you just came across in an email may not have been the best thing to do. I totally understand why you did it and as I said I did not object to it that much but you also have to understand where the people who read it are coming from as well. I know that you became very defensive about it but at the same time, please be a bit more tolerant of our feelings as well. As I said,I love reading everything that you write,I respect and value your opinions always, and I look forward to many more postings from you regarding a wide variety of topics, baseball and others as well. I am sorry that there was this "conflict" between the readers and yourself,as I know you meant well and I know where you were coming from. I will continue to read your blog, always,as I enjoy it very much, not to mention that I think that it is great that you have formed a bond with your supporters(that includes me)and I hope that the people who reacted the way that they did can get past this, move on to continue with the support of you and this blog. I also hope that you can get past this and will continue to post your thoughts and feelings as you have done so eloquently in the past. Do not stop! As for the election,as a Democrat,I obviously cannot say that I want McCain to win but I do look forward to the election process, hearing the results come in,and I do hope that it is a close race. I wish you the best, always, and what do you mean in your posting that you will probably retire? Don't do that! Even a half a season one more time would be great, regardless of what team. There are plenty of teams and supporters who want you back out there, including me. Go for it!

In a few hours, most Americans (and thanks to ACORN some illegal aliens, dead people, prison inmates, and others that don't even exist) will cast their votes for who they think should be the next president of the US.

Unfortunately, if you are to believe the polls, most of those votes will be cast in favor of a man about whom we know almost nothing. A man who's been so careful not to let us into his past; not to allow us to know what forces have shaped his thinking. A man who seems to want to hide that past from us for fear of what we might find.

Later today, The US will have a new president. And, there's a strong chance this new president will have been elected purely based on emotion. Almost the same way a little kid choses what gift to pick out from under the Christmass tree. He picks the one in the biggest box, with the prettiest wrapping, or the nicest bow. Never mind that the box may be empty, or worse yet, contain a bottle of poison.

But, there's still hope. The only real poll that matters is you casting your vote. Don't let ACORN, Hollywood, and the mainstream media dictate to us who the next president should be. Don't be discouraged by the fact that enough money has been spent to buy this election, and enough fraud has been committed to steal it. Go out there and fight for your country. Don't give up. America is worth fighting for.

The time is short, and the odds are long. But, hope is the last thing to die. God bless us all.

"The context of this letter was nothing more or less than has been spewed by media on both sides for much of this campaign, but this letter is a Birthday card compared to what the media has done, and said, about Governor Palin since she was nominated for the position of Vice President."

Cut your losses, Curt. You made a mistake, as you implicitly admit by removing the bogus letter. Arguing that the little screed you posted is on the same level as (the admittedly vapid) mainstream media coverage isn't helping your case.

Learn from your mistake. Use Google the next time you receive an interesting screed. Too busy? Forward to me and I'll do the vetting for free.

Here's your current process:

1. Mr. Shilling receives an email with a premise that is consistent with his beliefs.
2. Mr. Shilling reads it and likes it.
3. Mr. Shilling posts it to his blog.
4. Mr. Shilling removes or edits the post after the email is shown to be factually incorrect.

I'd like to suggest step 2a:

2a. Mr. Shilling selects one specific item from the email and uses Google to quickly assesses its accuracy. Try Snopes first, too.

-or-

2b. Mr. Shilling forwards the email to syphax, who returns a "go/no go" reply. (Syphax does not agree with Mr. Shilling on many political matters, but syphax loves the truth more than any ideology)

Adding either of these would eliminate step 4!

As for Sarah Palin: She came out dishing it at the RNC convention. What'd she expect to happen after that? It's amazing to me how some Republicans, who are so quick to criticize liberals for claiming to be victims of this or that, are so quick to cry victim themselves.

A teacher one time was teaching her class about democracy. The class nominated 2 candidates and the candidates got up to debate in front of the class. Johnny got up and had all of his materials in hand- prepared for what he would do if elected. Susie got up and had one sentence to say: "If elected- I will give everyone ice cream". That's all the class heard were the words - ice cream. Even though Susie couldn't tell the class how she would provide the ice cream- who would buy it- how it would arrive at school or what day they would get it- the class elected her. Because all they registered was the promise of instant gratification even though there was no factual proof for how or when it would arrive.

To so many American's - Obama is the ice cream. Even though he has no facts to go with his "plan", even though he has shown no basis in following thru with any promise he has ever made his constituents, he has made promises and told people what they want to hear. They're not questioning the why's and whens and hows. They don't care. They just want the ice cream. And when it never comes or it's melted and not ice cream at all- they'll be the same ones complaining. Not ready to accept responsibility for the fact that they chose empty promises and lies over facts and responsibility and preparedness.

The ones hating on you are the ones that haven't done their homework or their research and have no valid arguments to back up their opinion so they just throw insults at you.
