Is he a “gamer” to be admired? Or an insecure, selfish guy who puts his own ego above the needs of the team?

As opposed to a first baseman who feels some stiffness and sits out now so he can play down the stretch when it really counts.

There is usually a pretty good reason certain substances are considered illegal and it is in a totally different category than using the benefits of our modern medicine and surgery.
